New York, NY April 5, 2020…Don your Easter bonnets, your floral hats, your PEEPed-out fedoras, and other springtime finery, and connect with your fellow Easter revelers for Easter Parade 2020-style, a “promenade-in-place” community Zoom event. This year, NYC invites everyone across the globe to participate. Don’t miss this interactive, once-in-a-lifetime event, as Stonewall Community Development Corp brings the Annual Fifth Avenue Easter Parade directly to your home screen!

Easter Parade 2020-style features two interactive virtual rooms – The Promenade Room and The Bunny Hop Room.

The Promenade Room will recreate the century-old tradition of strolling Fifth Avenue, this year right from your living room, with the added bonus of strolling music. “Stroll and Pose” in front of iconic backgrounds such as Fifth Avenue and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. You will be able to check out everyone else’s bonnets and Sunday best!

The Promenade Room offers all registrants access to free festive computer background templates and easy instructions in advance of the event. Or you can create your own set or just be your fabulous self!

The Bunny Hop Room will feature dancing with live DJs from 1pm – 2pm, where you can show off your springtime moves. At 2pm, the Bunny Hop Room will host a Grand Bonnet Showcase, where festive participants can grab their 15 seconds of fame by being a featured guest.

Easter Hats and Costumes – Extravagant or Simple! Upholding social distancing, you are encouraged to reprise your favorite Easter outfit from years past or create something ingenious from supplies around the house. Repurpose all of those toilet paper tubes and make bunny ears, or perhaps glue some of your dry pasta into spring designs. Bedazzle your facemask. Spectators are welcome.

Proceeds from the event will support Stonewall Community Development Corporation – working to see New York City’s LGBTQ older adults and their allies in safe, welcoming housing they can afford, with access to health and mental services that meet their unique needs.   www.stonewallcdc.org   www.StonewallVillageNYC.org

About the Stonewall Community Development Corporation
Stepping Up to Respond to COVID-19 Isolation for Seniors

Our mission at Stonewall Community Development Corporation is to see LGBTQ older adults and their allies in safe, welcoming housing they can afford, with access to health and mental health services that meet their unique needs.

As part of our work, after two years of testing and development, we launched an interactive, virtual village platform in December of 2019.   The platform allows us to reach and engage seniors, many of whom are isolated at home. Stonewall Village NYC has robust, interactive technology, including message forums, hipaa-compliant video chat and Zoom for meetings and events. As part of our rollout, we were doing live monthly events with partner senior centers throughout the City.

From our work, we know that isolation kills. Now that our senior center partners have suddenly had to close their physical spaces, we have quickly pivoted and expanded our staff, in order to be able to create pop-up senior centers for them on our platform. With a homepage on Stonewall Village NYC, and access to all of the technology, the centers have been able to create some interactive programs with their clients and resume some services.

In addition to providing the centers with free access to all of the technology, we are providing technical training and support to their staff and meeting facilitators at no charge.

Each senior client must also be introduced to the technology and onboarded, so that they can fully engage in the interactive programming.   We are providing the individual technical support to enable each client to participate, whether the issue is equipment challenges or general lack of familiarity and comfort with the technology. Once onboarded, that senior is now empowered to use technology interactively into the future.

Finally, we are creating a learning hub to document and track the challenges, the hacks and the longer-term solutions we are discovering as we address, on a case by case basis, the tech divides that keep seniors isolated.

Because we know that everyone is struggling, we are making all of this available without charge. We ask you to make a tax-deductible donation to help keep this work going. Thank you!
