Volunteer Spotlight : Patrick Nommensen

“…cultures from around the world come together to celebrate their passion – dance. “

Dance Parade, Inc. is a volunteer supported non-profit organization! It is the dedication, expertise and rhythm of these brave few that are solely responsible for the success of the event and all the background work that goes on all year long leading up to the parade and festival. Every month, we choose a different volunteer to spotlight.   We ask them a few questions to let you know who they are, where they’ve come from and where they see themselves in the future.

How did you first stumble upon Dance Parade?

I actually first stumbled upon Dance Parade on an online volunteer listing. The listing was asking for volunteers to help with WordPress.
What is your current role in Dance Parade?
I am part of the Web Committee headed by Hal Lamster. Typically Hal emails me what needs to be done on the website and I’ll make the changes. I’m mainly involved with the information and look of the website.
What is your favorite style of dance to watch? to participate in?

I enjoy watching traditional dance styles of third world countries though I don’t really like to participate – I guess I’m more of an observer!

If you could share the stage with anyone in history famous or not, living or deceased, a trained dancer or not, performing a routine choreographed by yourself…who would it be?

If I would be in this position I would perform a routine with a group of “professional” traditional Haitian stunt dancers. I saw a group of guys do this in Haiti one time and it was pretty amazing. I don’t know the name of the dance type but they were crazy – throwing themselves all over the place!
What does the Dance Parade slogan “one parade, many cultures” mean to you?
To me, the slogan represents that cultures from around the world come together to celebrate their passion – dance. It’s like a melting pot of cultures and dance styles.

What dance group are you most looking forward to seeing this year in the parade?

This will actually be my first time at Dance Parade this year.
If you could pick a Grand Marshall for this year’s parade….who would it be?

I would pick someone that is still in the early part of their career – someone who can get the younger people involved. Nolan Funk would seem like a good fit.
” This Canadian performer is well known as the star of Nickelodeon’s musical movie ”Spectacular!” He currently stars as Conrad Birdie in Roundabout’s star-studded revival of Bye Bye Birdie. ”
Part of volunteering has a lot to do with strong leadership skills and major teamwork skills….if you were to pick a volunteer of the month…who would you choose?
Hal! He has invested a lot of time into the website and database production.

If you could pick another country to hold a Dance Parade and Festival….which would it be?

I think having it in Barcelona would be pretty amazing. It’s a very diverse location with much history to be explored.

Volunteering at a non profit organization can at times be daunting and frustrating with limited personnel and limited funding….what is it that keeps you coming back for more and more?
I enjoy volunteering and also have rather extensive nonprofit management experience. I enjoy working with websites – especially with WordPress – and if I can help an organization at the same time it’s perfect.

What salesman pitch would you use to attract a new volunteer into the cult that is Dance Parade?

Dance Parade is a large organization with a small family feel. It’s one of the biggest dance organizations around yet everyone can be reached and the collaboration process is fairly streamlined.
