Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Natalya Grigoriev!

Dance Parade, Inc. is a volunteer supported non-profit organization and it is the dedication, expertise and passion of these individuals that make our events so successful!
In each issue of STEPS!, we choose a different volunteer to spotlight. We ask them a few questions about the magic they help create within the Dance Parade experience.  Check out how you can volunteer for the 2015 Parade by clicking here!
Hi Natalya, Thanks for taking the time to speak with us about your background and volunteering for Dance Parade!

What is your current role in Dance Parade, Inc?
I’m the Treasurer and provide accounting and tax preparation for the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that produces the Dance Parade, Festival and Community Engagement programs. I’ve been supporting dance parade on the finance committee since 2008!

FullSizeRender(3)What is your favorite style of dance to watch? to participate in?
I’m really intrigued with Latin dancing such as Tango, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Mambo, Latin Jazz–love the energy of all those styles!

What is your professional background?
I’m a CPA and do bookkeeping and tax preparation for individuals and small businesses. If anyone in the Dance Parade community needs help on that stuff, they can reach me with: emailcustomaccounting@gmail.com

What is your dance background or interest in dance?
I tried all different varieties of dancing but enjoy the street styles, whacking, voguing and house, locking and popping. I’ve really tried a lot of styles, everything from ballet to tap and African. I went to Capezio Peridance studio for 4 years. After all that I really like Voguing. There are currently three distinct styles of vogue: Old Way, New Way and Vogue Fem. Voguing is becoming more mainstream nowdays as well as becoming super popular internationally. All ages, genders, people of all sexual orientations are falling in love with Vogue.

If you could share the stage with anyone in history performing a routine choreographed by yourself…who would it be?
Liza Minnelli from the Broadway hit, “Cabaret.” I really love the way she carries and expresses herself.

What does this year’s theme “Live Free and Dance ” mean to you?
Express yourself, your personality, your feelings, your inner-world freely through movement.

What dance group or dance style are you most looking forward to seeing this coming year in the parade?
Waacking and Voguing – Both these styles are “street dance styles”. Even though people think Madonna made “Voguing” famous” this style of dance actually rose from Harlem ballrooms by African Americans and Latino Americans in the early 1960s.

If you could pick a Grand Marshal for this year’s parade….who would it be?
Liza Minnelli are you listening?!?

FullSizeRender(2)If you could pick another country to hold a Dance Parade and Festival….which would it be?
Israel, people love to dance there.

Volunteering at a non profit organization can at times be daunting and frustrating with limited personnel and limited funding….what is it that keeps you coming back for more and more?
The culture of dancing and free spirited people involved with Dance Parade are really lovely.

What pitch would you use to attract a new volunteer onto the Dance Parade team?
If you join DP you will spread the love for dancing, making it more accessible to all the different groups to the population in the city. If you volunteer you spread the talent, to show kids and seniors… to be seen. It is a day of “Happiness”, that’s what Dance Parade is and that’s why you should be a part of it!
