In each issue of STEPS!, we choose a different volunteer to spotlight. We ask them a few questions about the magic they help create within the Dance Parade experience. Check out how you can volunteer for the 2016 Parade by clicking here!
How did you first find out about Dance Parade?
I actually found it on Google. Haha! I wanted to do some volunteering, and I wanted to combine it with dance, so I Googled “dance” and “volunteering”, and Dance Parade came up. And now, this will be my second year working as a volunteer.
What is your current role in Dance Parade, Inc?
Well, I’m on the steering committee again, and I have taken on the volunteer coordinator role this year.
What is your favorite style of dance to watch? to participate in?
Hmmm…I quite like ballroom dancing, and I also quite like contemporary. And swing dance. I mean it depends on whether it’s to watch or to do. I ballroom dance, and I absolutely love it. I also quite like Latin styles of dance. I like any kind of free dancing. Just being able to move and let the body do the talking. Haha! See what the body does for itself. It has a voice of its own.
What is your dance background or interest in dance?
I started ballroom dancing when I first moved to New York…about three years ago. I’ve always been fascinated with ballroom; but, I have no formal dance background. I’m just really into movements of the body and yoga. I guess I became more involved when I moved to NY apart from all my years clubbing back in the day.
If you could share the stage with anyone in history famous or not, living or deceased, a trained dancer or not, performing a routine choreographed by yourself…who would it be?
Albert Einstein. I think it would be fun and I would be interested to see how we would collaborate. I’m sure we’d invent a new style!
What dance group or dance style are you most looking forward to seeing this
coming year in the parade?
I hope we get something new. I really enjoyed the Japanese style.
Obviously, the Celtic is close to my heart. I’d like to see some more
partner dancing this year. Let’s get some more ballroom in there.
If you could pick a Grand Marshal for this year’s parade who would it be?
DJ Tasha Blank, I love her story and she inspires me.
What pitch would you use to attract a new volunteer onto the Dance Parade
I would use the ‘spirit of dance parade’. You don’t have to have a formal dance background. It’s just a lot of fun and you make connections with great people. You get out and party with people of all different
backgrounds. It’s all inclusive, and really beautiful to watch.
If you could pick another country to hold a Dance Parade and Festival….which would it be?
I’d like it to go somewhere in West Africa. Maybe Sierra Leone. Someplace like that. I think that would be kinda cool. It would also be great to see it in London. London’s so cosmopolitan. I think you’d get a really good mix of people.
What does this year’s theme “Decade of Dance” mean to you?
It’s great that it’s ten years. Going into its double digits. It has definitely gained momentum over the past couple of years. A new evolution…a new generation. What does the future hold for Dance Parade? That’s really what I’m thinking. Why wouldn’t it make it to twenty, thirty years?
